This project began with the article: Why are all the great artists men?

After reading this article I was frustrated by the continued narrative that history’s greatest creators are overwhelmingly male. When I shared the article with friends, one asked, “Were there any female artists at the time?” Another responded, “Not in the news.”

The absence of recognition does not mean the absence of talent. For centuries, countless women have created, innovated, led, and inspired, yet many have been overlooked, underrepresented, or left out of the conversation.

Women Empowering Women is a portrait series celebrating the women who have inspired me. The project started with fellow illustrators but continues to expand as a celebration of women around the world. Because inspiration does not always make the headlines.

Sometimes it’s the woman you meet at a coffee shop who offers a kind word.
Sometimes it’s a story that changes the way you see the world.
Sometimes it’s simply another woman reminding you what is possible.
